Buying an electric bike is one of the best decisions you can make — but like any vehicle, it needs a little care to keep it running at its best. The good news? E-bike maintenance is straightforward, and a few simple habits will keep your ride smooth, safe, and long-lasting. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Keep Your Battery Healthy
The battery is the heart of your e-bike, so it deserves the most attention.
- Charge regularly — Don't let your battery drain completely. Try to keep it between 20% and 80% for everyday use, and only charge to 100% before a long ride.
- Store correctly — If you're not riding for a while, store the battery at around 50% charge in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or a freezing garage.
- Use the right charger — Always use the charger that came with your bike. Third-party chargers can damage the battery cells over time.
- Don't charge immediately after riding — Let the battery cool down for 15–20 minutes before plugging in.
2. Check Your Tyres Regularly
Correct tyre pressure makes a huge difference to your range, comfort, and safety.
- Check pressure at least once a week — under-inflated tyres drain your battery faster and increase puncture risk.
- Refer to the sidewall of your tyre for the recommended PSI range.
- Inspect tyres for cuts, embedded debris, or uneven wear, and replace them when the tread wears thin.
3. Keep the Chain Clean and Lubricated
A dirty or dry chain causes unnecessary wear on your drivetrain and makes pedalling harder.
- Clean your chain every 100–200 miles, or after riding in wet or muddy conditions.
- Use a degreaser to remove old grime, then apply a quality bike chain lubricant.
- Wipe off any excess lube — too much attracts dirt.
- Check for chain stretch every few months using a chain wear indicator tool.
4. Inspect Your Brakes
E-bikes are heavier than regular bikes and travel at higher speeds, so reliable brakes are essential.
- Test your brakes before every ride — they should engage firmly without feeling spongy.
- Check brake pad thickness regularly and replace them when they wear down to 1–2mm.
- If you have hydraulic disc brakes, have the fluid bled annually by a bike mechanic.
- Keep brake rotors clean and free from oil or grease.
5. Clean Your E-Bike Properly
Regular cleaning prevents corrosion and keeps your bike looking great.
- Use a damp cloth or soft brush — avoid high-pressure jet washers, which can force water into electrical components.
- Pay attention to the drivetrain, frame joints, and around the motor.
- Dry the bike thoroughly after washing, especially around the battery contacts and display unit.
- Apply a light frame polish or protective spray to keep the paintwork in good condition.
6. Check Bolts and Connections
Vibration from riding can gradually loosen bolts over time.
- Every month, check that handlebars, stem, seat post, and wheel axles are all tightened to the correct torque.
- Inspect electrical connectors and cables for signs of wear, fraying, or corrosion.
- If anything looks damaged, don't ride until it's been checked by a professional.
7. Service Your E-Bike Annually
Even with great home maintenance, an annual service by a qualified e-bike mechanic is worth every penny. They'll check the motor, battery health, brake system, and drivetrain in detail — catching small issues before they become expensive problems.
